Oh my word, what a busy week!!!! Been getting 'stuff' made for our first craft fair of the year tomorrow. It's the first of a new monthly makers market being held at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, East Street, Havant, Hants

Copper Foiled hanging Heart

We thought we would take along some smaller things like fused glass fridge magnets, and copper foiled hanging hearts, seeing as Valentines Day and Mother's Day are coming up.

My daughter has been unemployed for a couple of weeks (she started a new job today!) and has been making patchwork padded hearts and matching greetings cards to compliment our range of hearts. So we will be giving these an outing for her tomorrow to see what sort of response they get.

Hopefully there will be a fair amount of footfall, as The Spring has clubs etc going on during the day, and also I think the event has been well advertised. We shall see, fingers crossed!

What a difference a day makes!!!

Last Monday (16/01/12) I was blissfully unaware of what the week had in store for me! By Tuesday evening bad things started to happen, and you know how the old saying goes "things come in three's", well not wrong there.

Tuesday evening my daughter was told that the new job she was starting the following morning had been made redundant. Having recently taken out a new mortgage, you can imagine that this was a bit of a blow for her, however as a small consolation she has been able to put them in breach of contract and claim a months pay.

On Wednesday morning I had a phone call to say my son was in casualty suffering from chest pains and difficulty breathing. He was given all the usual tests for a heart attack, but fortunately this was not the case, he was suffering from Pericarditis, which is an inflammation of the sac around the heart.

On Sunday my brother, who suffers from Dermatomyositis, was taken to hospital with light headedness and chest pains so again all the tests for heart attack were run. Again, this was not the case and he was diagnosed with esophageal spasms, . He was kept in overnight and released yesterday.

So as you can see, a fairly traumatic week!

BUT...............from the midst of these troubles have come forth some new work! Oddly enough though, one of the new pieces is a heart shaped tiffany suncatcher...........was someone trying to tell us something?????????

We have also started a new line that we are calling Pic Stics. These little fella's are about 3cm wide and 14cm long, and are fused glass. They will be presented with a ribbon to hang, and a gift bag.

We are also working on some fused glass fridge/noticeboard magnets at the moment, as well as leaded hanging strips, so I will post piccies of these when they are ready.

Hopefully the rest of this week will continue like a well oiled machine!

Hello everyone, and a Happy New Year.

Today has been a computer day for Chris and I. We have been updating the website with course dates etc. and have also decided to go for a new image in our header. This image is a close up of a photo which one of us took some time ago, it has been manipulated in Photoshop and then we have fused the image onto glass to make a framed picture from.

We can produce images from anyone's photo's, either digital or conventional paper, and we find these work really well with vintage photographs, as below

We have a busy year in front of us, with several shows and events, not least an exhibition with our art group Group AF at The Spring in Havant, Hants starting early March. Details of our activities this year can be found under the events tab on our website.

Not a bad weekend!!!

Well, all in all not a bad weekend.

We were at the Christmas Craft Fair at Making Space in Havant yesterday and today, and we had a very good weekend indeed. Plenty of sales, loads of interest in our raku fired portraiture, as well as people becoming very interested in the raku firing process.

We only took the raku stock and copper foiled glass Christmas decs to Making Space as my niece Melanie was selling our fused glass decs and other fused glass pieces at a Christmas Fair in Wickham on Saturday. She also had good results on the sales front, and I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of "stuff" she sold. Well done Mel!!

I'm hoping that we have enough glass Christmas Decs left for the stall we have at a Craft Fair next Saturday in Rowlands Castle, I would prefer not to have to make more during this week as we have plenty of other things to be catching up on.

It's well on the way now isn't it???? Christmas that is! Hope everyone is getting organized, and not like me, leaving it till the last minute. I really must start buying some pressies soon.

Hopefully, now that the classes have finished until after Christmas, and the making has slowed down a bit, I may be able to make some headway!

Christmas Craft Fairs

Make, make, make, that's all we seem to be doing at the moment. Lots of bits and pieces to make for a couple of Christmas Craft Fairs that are coming up and also for selling at 1000 Lakeside, North Harbour Portsmouth next Tuesday.

We will be at the Christmas Craft Fair at Making Space, Leigh Park, Havant, Hants on 3rd & 4th December, and on the same day (3rd) we will also have a stall at a Christmas Fete in Wickham.

On 10th December we will be at a Christmas Fair in Rowlands Castle, Hants.

New Look to the Blog

Hello everyone

I've been playing again, and thought that I would try the new Dynamic View for the blog, what do you think of it? I quite like it because you can see earlier postings at a glance instead of having to search through them.

It's been a really busy week this week. Lot's of time spent in the studio making work for our Christmas shows. We don't have a lot going on this year as regards this type of event, but we are at 1000 Lakeside, Portsmouth at the end of November, as well as taking part in the Christmas Craft Fair at Making Space on 3rd and 4th December. We also have a stall at a Christmas Fete in Wickham on 3rd December and one at a Craft Event in Rowlands Castle on 10th December.

There are a selection of our snowmen Christmas tree decorations in Poppy Charlotte at Selborne. This little shop is well worth a visit, as it stocks all sorts of gifts ideas, many in the vintage style.

I have also decided recently to try my hand at painting. Many years ago I used to do a lot of pencil drawing, but didn't really get into painting. What do you think of my first attempt?

Maybe back to the drawing board eh???

Hi all, more good news, we have been accepted for 3 fairly large craft and garden shows next year. So with the Stansted and Firle Place shows as well next year we will be extra busy with the making. No rest for the wicked!

Would you believe it!!!!!! As I posted previously things are getting quite busy at the moment, well over the weekend I have found out that the group of artists that Chris and I are involved with have been given an exhibition space to be hung at the beginning of March next year at The Spring Arts Centre in Havant, Hampshire. Although both of us have been working towards this exhibition for a while, we both have a lot of work to do to be ready by March!!!!!

Anyway we have just returned from a short break in Cornwall, such a beautiful place, and are now full of inspiration for new work. Although these ideas probably won't come into play until at least January 2012. So watch this space!!!!!!

Busy times ahead.

Classes are running well, and are full up with waiting lists. We have a few fairs to go to before Christmas, but we are going to be flat out making new work for shows next year.

We have finally bitten the bullet and applied for some of the BIG shows. Read BIG as expensive to enter!!!!!! But we won't know until we try, whether we can be successful selling at this type of event or not. Also we will be concentrating a bit more on garden ornamentation with our leaded glass, as this is a very good medium for outdoor "stuff".

The new studio venue is working well, and both Chris and I feel it was definitely a move worth making. It's great to be sharing with another creative person, as we can chat about our work, discuss new pieces etc. or we can just work happily away in a comfortable silence. Chris and I were saying the other day that it's a bit like the studio spaces we had at University where there were others around doing their own thing.

We will be having a short break this week, as we are off to Cornwall for a few days before the next round of classes begin, and the concentrated making for next year gets under way.

We're back once more

When Chris and I first decided to go into business I don't think we fully appreciated how much of our time Decima Designs would take up. The days, weeks and months seem to whizz by in a flurry of teaching and making, and before we know it we are back on our way to Christmas!!! I think we would both agree though, that we would rather be doing this than anything else in the world. We are both passionate about what we do and enjoy every minute of it.

Decima Designs has once again moved premises, this time to a purpose built art studio in Drayton, Nr Portsmouth, Hants. Although the area we have is slightly smaller than that of our last studio in Droxford, the whole ambience is much more suited to what we do. We share the studio with Wildlife Artist Alan Longmore, whose work is absolutely incredible. We hold our glass classes in this studio, and our pottery course is still run out of Making Space in Havant.

Anyway, things are moving forward for us. We are busy at the moment making leaded glass pieces for some Garden Shows we are going to next year, as well as trying to keep on top of the Christmas making and commissions that have come in. We have had to condense our classes from 5 to 4 weekly to free up more making time. The classes we are running are full at the moment, so we must be doing something right. LOL!

This year has been particularly busy for me in a personal capacity. My son Arron married his fiancee Sarah in May, and my daughter Jodie married her fiance Dave in August. We handmade all the invitations and other stationary for both weddings, and I also made 2 bridesmaids dresses and 8 leaded glass table decorations for Jodie and Dave's wedding, as well as drying hundreds of rose petals to use as confetti at the August wedding. I must say though, that I could not have been more proud or happy at both the weddings, Arron asked Jodie to be his best person at his wedding, and then he gave Jodie away at hers. To see both of my children so close to each other, and so happy on their respective wedding days was a sight to behold.

Hello again everyone, and I hope the New Year has been good to you all so far.

The Christmas period was a good time for us business wise, with our sales at the Christmas Fair at Harold Hillier Gardens far exceeding our expectations. Our little glass Christmas decorations were the hit of the year I think!!!!! After the first weekend we had to rush back to the studio and make more to fill up our display ready for the following weekend.

The Gift Card idea went down well and we have sold several courses and workshops through that scheme. So there are people now coming to our courses because someone was thoughtful enough to give them this as a Christmas or Birthday gift.

Anyway, January is upon us and we have a whole new year to fill. Our glass and pottery classes are going well, and it's time to think about designing new stock for our outlets as well as finding more outlets to sell our work.

Hopefully this year we will be taking part in more fine art exhibitions with our own individual work. Chris with her mixed media pieces, and me with my ceramics. We are definitely taking part in the Havant Arts Trail this year with our fellow artists in Group AF, and there is a possibility that Group AF will also be holding an exhibition at The Spring Arts Centre in Havant. So busy times ahead.

I am honoured to have had my raku fired wall piece 'Wasteland, used as a header on the newsletter of Portmouth Genealogy (www.portsmouth-genealogy.com) and would recommend this site to anyone researching their family history.

After two weeks

Well, here we are 2 weeks after moving into our new premises completely, and we have been very busy.

Classes are going very well and enquiries are coming in for the next round starting in November. Our student numbers now are into the 30's which is great!!!!!

I think I will have to declare our pottery class as the noisiest class of 2010, when they all met again last Thursday after having the summer off, you would have thought they hadn't seen each other for years. If we had been tested for noise pollution, we probably would have been shut down!

All I can say is everyone obviously has a good time as well as learning and being creative.

Our relocation is complete!!!!! YAY!!

We have now completely moved across to our new premises in Droxford, and very nice they are too. Although the room is slightly smaller than the one at Broadmarsh, because of it's layout we have loads more storage and are feeling very organized with a place for everything. Long may it last. The weeks are zooming by now, and our move to Wallops Wood, Droxford is getting very close. We have been advertising our new courses and the response has been very good. The Pottery course on a Thursday Evening is now fully booked, and has a waiting list. The 10 week Leaded Glass course on a Wed Eve has only one space left, and the fused glass courses are gathering students by the week, so all is going well.

I have another commission on the go at the moment, a soldier themed one, more on that when it has advanced a little.

Chris' etched aluminium and copper enamelled pieces are attracting interest. Not surprising really as they are gorgeous. Photo's definitely do not do them justice!!!!!

The raku bowls etc still seem to be selling well, but we would like to start creating a new range of shapes, so maybe you will hear about this in the future.

Got to go now and look at wedding dresses with my daughter Jodie, who is getting married next August, and my son Arron, whose innocent little face is on one of the tiled portrait pieces (blog Friday 28th May) is now 31 and also getting married in May next year. Very exciting times.

Hello again, it's been a while since I blogged cos things have been moving rapidly just recently. Our classes have been gathering pace with new students coming in via the website, we have an exhibition taking place at The Oxmarket Centre of Arts until 24th September and on top of that we have decided to move premises!!!!!!!!!!!

The decision to move was not taken lightly, and a lot of painstaking research was done before our final decision was made. The factor that swayed our choice was the price of rent for the premises. At Broadmarsh the rent for the room we are in was going to reach an unachievable level once our graduate deal was over, so we had to look elsewhere.

Our new premises at Wallops Wood near Droxford are of a similar size to Broadmarsh and the set up is bright and welcoming for our customers, so we are pleased with our choice. We have 24/7 access, so whether our fused glass, leaded glass, or copper enamelling courses are in the day, evening or weekend, classes are not a problem.

There are, regretfully one or two students who for personal reasons cannot make the move with us, but the majority are happy to continue their classes at Wallops Wood. We have also picked up new students from around the Meon Valley.

So a busy time for us, particularly the end of September/beginning of October when we fully move lock, stock and barrel to Wallops Wood.

Looking forward to the coming festive season and all its selling opportunities, just got to continue to make the stock to sell.

A piece of really exciting news is that we have 2 pieces of artwork shortlisted for The National Art Competition, an exhibition that is chosen from 1600+ applications nationwide. Will keep you posted on how it goes.

I have been busy lately with a few new pieces of work. The starting point was 'Transitions in Nature" and I was inspired by images of poppies, so I started to experiment with these. One thing led to another, and I began thinking about what poppies represent to us in this day and age. The rest I leave up to the viewer

I wouldn't say that our attendance at the craft fair on Sunday was a total waste of time, but it came pretty close. Sold nothing all day, until we were in to the last hour, then sold 2 items quite close to each other. At least we covered our stall cost and made a bit of profit, so not all bad news. Could have sold one more item, but the lady asked if I would take less for it and I said "No" We put a fair price on our products and this still does not cover the labour involved in making the things, so I felt a bit put out!!!!!

Anyway, I was pleased that one of the items sold was from our new range of raku fired clocks that we were piloting, so looks like we should make more of these.

Our next event is a Pamper Evening on 24th June at the Hilton Hotel Portsmouth, we shall see what that has to offer!

Craft Fair on Sunday

New raku fired portraiture a hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Much to my delight, my raku fired ceramic portraiture has been a bit of a hit! As those of you who attended the private view of the degree show will know, I sold a few on the night.

I have also secured a couple of commissions on the strength of what was showing, and now the University of Chichester have requested the loan of 3 small hangings to exhibit on and off campus for the next year.

It appears that what I have achieved is quite unique, so when I get a chance I will start 'plugging' them around galleries to see if I can get them in anywhere else.

It all kicks off again tonight, evening classes start with fused glass tonight, leaded glass tomorrow, and pottery on thursday. Last Friday @ 5pm was the deadline for all of our uni work to be in, and now we are looking forward to the Private View this Friday (and results in July). It will be great for all of our family and friends to see the results of what we have been rabbiting on about these past three years.

After the big build up to the deadline, I spent the weekend doing NOTHING! Just chillin' out and trying to get over the fact that uni has finished and I am no longer a student (at my age it's probably just as well!)

Anyway, onwards and upwards. There's going to be a big surge of energy put into the business now, cos we gotta make this work.

Well there it was gone. A big thank you to all who made our Open Day a success on Saturday!
It was a really good day, with lots of people coming to have a look around, watch the demos and have a chat.

Some of the raku pieces were sold as soon as they came out of the kiln!!!!!!!!!! and some people signed up for courses. So all in all a good day.

Chris and I really enjoyed it, and I think it is something we will definitely do again.

This turquoise raku fired sphere turned out beautifully. You can see from the copper reduction how the flames from the sawdust licked up around the form. Each piece of Raku fired ceramic is unique, as the firing and post reduction process can never be fully predicted or controlled. A truly fascinating process

It's a funny old world

Isn't it funny how some days things can really go your way? Today was one of those days for us. It all started with a phone call from the Oxmarket Centre for the Arts in Chichester, where we were offered an exhibition space for 3 weeks in September. Then we took some raku pots and glass pendants along to The Spring Arts Centre in Havant for them to display and sell, we were fully expecting them to choose which pieces they wanted to keep and reject the pieces they didn't want, but they kept them all!!!!

Travelling on to Clayman at Chichester to collect some supplies, when I got another phone call from the events lady at Leigh Park library, wanting us to run some courses at Leigh Park and Hayling Island libraries. And then on top of that, Linda at Clayman agreed to display our course brochure in their shop.

So all in all, a very busy, but very productive day.

We are taking some more raku pieces to the Oxmarket in Chichester tomorrow, because sales have been so good on the last lot they want some more. Whoop, whoop!!!

Been busy the last few days continuing with 'stuff' for the degree show deadline which is 7th May at 5.00pm. Once this has been finalised, then we can concentrate more on getting the business up and running in the way that we want it to continue. By this I mean more advertising, more getting work into galleries, and running more classes than we do at the moment.

Don't forget our Open Studio on April 24th where a good time can be had by all.

We have well and truly moved in to our new studio today. All the furniture is in, now all we have to do is fill up the shelves and cupboards to make it look like we are busy. New course brochure is out now and we're all ready to go!!!

New Premises

How very exciting.................our own business premises. On 1st April 2010 we will pick up the keys to our new workshop/studio. We are going to be at Basepoint Havant, if you go to Google maps and type in Decima Designs, you will see the location and how to get there.

Off to Ikea today to look at furniture possibilities, as we will be running glass classes from there after Easter. Can't wait. Only problem is that we still have to finish our Fine Art degree and the deadline is looming fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, where has the day gone?
Delivered our Raku to the Ox Market, thought they would choose the pieces they wanted. Guess what? They took all of our pieces!
Started on presentation, then Eileen wanted us to play with a new glass cutting system that arrived, then it was tea time, then we had to go to work, then the day will be gone and not much presentation done. Grrrrrrrr will I get it done in time?
Why can't days last at least 8 hours longer?

Another day tomorrow, thank goodness.

Well here we are, Wednesday, only a week to go before we have to each give a 15 minute Powerpoint presentation at Uni. "That should be easy enough" I hear you say. Yeah, right, maybe it would be if we had started to put it together, but neither of us have. Not panicking just yet (well I'm not, but Chris is a little bit, she keeps going around going grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!). Trouble is it's all about our own work, with loads of pictures, and inspiration sources, and art theory etc. etc. etc. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

However, had a good afternoon helping Chris to teach cardmaking to a lovely group of ladies at Gosport Discovery Centre (Library as we like to call it). All very relaxing and friendly and enjoyable.

We are taking some of our raku pieces to the Oxmarket Art Centre in Chichester tomorrow, as they have asked if we want to display 'stuff' in their cabinets. Wish us luck.

New Website

It's arrived!!!!!!!!!! Our new website has gone live and we are sooooooooo proud of it. It's very exciting. My brother Pat built it for us, and he has done such a good job. It now means that we can 'show off' to more people.

We did some raku this morning, in the rain, but we got some beautiful pieces out. I will post photos of them when I have taken them. Even in the rain I find Raku exciting, there's nothing like pulling a glossy, hot piece of ceramic from the kiln and burying it in sawdust. Well actually there is, the next stage of taking it from the sawdust and dowsing it in water is just as exciting.

Busy day at uni today, but not much to show for it really. I seemed to be bumbling about all day and all I achieved was making two 2x2 feet boards to hang on the wall. These boards will hold the tiles I am making for the degree show. My final image will be 12 feet long by 2 feet high and made entirely from raku fired 6x6 inch tiles.

I have a bad eye today, I think it's a sty or something. Very itchy and very sore, Chris made me go to the pharmacy and get some drops to put in. I must admit they have made it feel a bit better.

It is funny that when it comes to writing something, everything goes blank. Anyway, last day before back to uni for the last semester, very scary. Lots to do today, not least trying to get images of our work sorted so we can get our website really rolling.

Well here we are then, a blog at last. It's funny isn't it how you think you have lots to say, but then when it comes down to it you can't think of anything. Mind you it is 11.18pm and I'm getting tired now after setting this lot up. Bed methinks!
